I'm trying to build a computer that can hot swap NVMe drives. My current build with MB699VP-B can not read any drives. I could use some help to which hardware would work best.

Current Build:
Drive Bay: MB699VP-B (miniSAS HD)
Cables: Mini SAS SFF-8643 to SFF-8643 x4
NVMe Adapter: MB705M2P-B x4
Motherboard: SuperMicro X11SAE-F
RAID Card: LSI 9400 16i SAS/SATA/NVMe Tri-Mode PCIe HBA
OS: Linux Mint or Windows 11

Hi cyang,

Thank you for your inquiry.

Regarding to your possible drive detection issue, the MB699VP-B is not designed to connect to tri-mode RAID cards such as your LSI 9400-16i. This is due to the legacy pin-out of the rear connectors.

If you plan on using a tri-mode supported RAID card, the correct enclosure would be the MB699VP-B V3 (https://global.icydock.com/product_326.html). The compatible cables and PCIe expansion adapter cards are listed in the FAQ section of the product page.

Also, could you also provide the manufacturer and model number of the drives you’re using? This information will help us further troubleshoot the detection issue.

To clarify, our NVMe products are generally hot-plug capable, not hot-swap.

  • Hot-plug means a drive can be installed and then detected after a manual refresh (like in device manager).
  • Hot-swap means drives can be added or removed on a live, running computer and the drive will be detected automatically without a computer restart or a manual refresh.
However, for the smoothest experience, we recommend changing drives when the computer is off.
